Joe Nall Flying Event 2017 by Andy Argenio

Without exception, and although I have been doing it for 15 consecutive years, Joe Nall is the event many of us consider the most spectacular R/C flying event we attend that gets bigger and better every year. This year was no exception, with over 1,800 registered pilots and tens of thousands of AMA members and guests in attendance. Some came to fly off the incredible grass runways and a private lake on 400 gorgeous acres of land. Others came to watch the best pilots flying all types of model aircraft, but most will say they were there to meet old friends, make new friends, and experience the comradery and the hospitality that this event is best known for.

New site additions included the air-conditioned Learning/Education Center which was open with a vast collection of model aircraft, a large movie screen, and a section with multiple flight simulators. The sites for camping, trailers and RVs were enlarged. There were eight active flight lines including the main Giant Scale, 3-D Giant Scale, Floatplane, Electric Park Flyer, Helicopter, Control Line, FPV, and a FPV-MultiGP race course area. More than 70 vendors attended with a great variety of RC products and discount prices

The noon time air show demonstrated (Videos below) the evolving talents and skills of yet another generation of pilots and aircraft capable of unbelievable maneuvers. The MultiGP quadcopter race pilots demonstrated at Joe Nall that they are true hobbyists and as passionate about FPV RC building and flying as many of us are with fixed-wing aircraft.

The AMA membership meeting was well attended and AMA officers and staff updated the members on AMA initiatives, government affairs, listened to member concerns and answered questions.

New England members were in abundance at every flight line and camping area that AVP Steve Brehm and I were at during the week. Many members made it a point to stop and thank us and other AMA officers for the efforts we put forth as AMA volunteers to ensure the future of aeromodelling.

Not a day or night went by when we were not invited to join district members and friends at their camp sites for food, drink, good conversation and to watch lighted planes flying in the night sky. (Thanks’ Nick, Don, Mark, Carl and other contributors!)

If you haven’t been to Joe Nall, consider joining us in 2018. The fun, friendship, and hospitality truly can’t be beat!
